Overview:
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)—formerly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)—affects approximately 30% of the global adult population, making it the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Prevalence is even higher among individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes, with some studies reporting rates exceeding 70%. In addition, about 20% of individuals with type 2 diabetes have undiagnosed liver fibrosis, highlighting the need for enhanced screening. Several major advancements related to this metabolic disease have occurred in the last few years, including a shift in nomenclature from NAFLD to MASLD, new therapeutic approvals, and updated risk stratification tools.
Purpose and Audience:
AACE will develop a new consensus statement and algorithm with updated guidance for screening, diagnosis, and management of MASLD. The purpose of this new clinical guidance document is to address changes in practice that have occurred since publication of the 2022 AACE clinical practice guideline on NAFLD. The new MASLD algorithm will provide guidance for clinical care of individuals with MASLD that reflects the most current scientific understanding based on the latest evidence and FDA-approved therapies. The aim of the AACE MASLD algorithm will recognize the central role of endocrinologists and primary care physicians to proactively address MASLD, reduce disease progression and burden on hepatology specialists, and provide optimal care of individuals with MASLD. The target audience for this statement includes endocrinologists, primary care physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals who care for those with MASLD.
Task Force Roles and Responsibilities:
To develop this new AACE clinical guidance, we are seeking a chair, vice chair, authors, and a methodology fellow.
- The chair and vice chair will oversee development of the consensus statement with algorithm from scoping to publication, lead development and consensus meetings with the task force, and ensure that the statement reflects best practice based on evidence and that the project is completed within assigned timeline for submission to Endocrine Practice.
- Authors will provide input on scope, write narrative summaries of supporting evidence, benefits and harms, and clinical considerations for assigned sections and participate in discussions with the task force to achieve consensus on content.
- The methodology fellow will assist staff with literature searches, identification and selection of evidence, and aid in writing and review of the consensus statement as assigned by the chairs. Members at any career stage who are interested in additional training and experience in literature searches, evidence assessment, and scientific writing may apply for the position of methodology fellow.
Approved task force members will complete work electronically, meet via video conferences, fulfill ICMJE criteria for authorship and adhere to the AACE Conflict of Interest Policy.
