George Grunberger, MD, FACP, FACE

Dr. Grunberger is the chairman of Grunberger Diabetes Institute (GDI) in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and of Molecular Medicine & Genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine (Detroit, MI), Professor of Internal Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (Rochester, MI) and Visiting Professor at First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic).
Dr. Grunberger established and directed the Diabetes Program at the Detroit Medical Center (1986-2002) and was the Medical Director of Wayne State University’s Comprehensive Diabetes Center. He was tenured Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular Medicine and Genetics while in full time academia at Wayne State University. Between 1997 and 2001 he directed the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. He served as interim Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and Physician-in-Chief of the Detroit Medical Center (1995-1996). Dr. Grunberger did his fellowship and then basic and clinical research work at the Diabetes Branch of NIDDK/NIH (Bethesda, MD), internal medicine training at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH), M.D. training at the New York University School of Medicine and received bachelor’s degree at Columbia College of Columbia University (both in New York, NY).
Dr. Grunberger has published over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts, in addition to review articles, abstracts and book chapters. His research interests cover the spectrum of subjects related to diabetes, its complications and therapy. Dr. Grunberger has been an active member of professional organizations. He is Past President of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is a co-editor of two international diabetes journals. Dr. Grunberger has served as an educator of medical students, residents, endocrinology fellows, master’s and Ph.D. candidates, and junior faculty over the past 35 years.
