What is the AACE Disease State Network Diabetes? An introduction to the 2021 Team

Archived: This blog is from our 2021 Diabetes Disease State Network

We are a community of endocrinology and diabetes specialists passionate about diabetes clinical care, education, and advocacy. My interest in diabetes began serendipitously in medical school at the University of Rochester, New York. I had decided to take a year out of school and needed a research project. I was hired by Dr. Barry Gumbiner, an Endocrinology faculty member who turned out to be a wonderful mentor. He needed a student for a General Clinical Research Center project comparing weight loss, weight loss maintenance, glycemic control and insulin production in patients with type 2 diabetes placed on an extreme low carb/high monounsaturated fat vs low fat diet (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8621005/). I still remember every person I met and recruited for that study, and how badly each person wanted to better manage their diabetes and to become healthier. That experience started me on a path that took me to the University of Utah and finally to the University of Colorado (CU). After endocrinology fellowship at CU, I went on staff at the Denver VA Medical Center, and returned to CU in 2012. I have had the privilege to work with and learn from patients, peers and colleagues in Colorado including Drs. Boris Draznin, Jane Reusch, Bob Eckel, Mike McDermott and Will Hiatt, as well as across the US and around the world. My work has focused on many facets of diabetes and its complications – from clinical care to basic and clinical research to medical education.

I am a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine, Director of the Glucose Management Team at the University of Colorado Hospital, Program Director of University of Colorado Diabetes Fellowship, and Clinician-Scientist at CPC Clinical Research. This year, I am chairing the Disease State Network in Diabetes for AACE. Joining me are the DSN Diabetes vice-chairs:

  • Georgia Davis, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine and Grady Memorial Hospital
  • Madhuri M. Vasudevan, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Baylor College of Medicine, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center
  • Rifka C. Schulman-Rosenbaum, MD, FACE, CNSC, Director of Inpatient Diabetes, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Division of Endocrinology, Northwell Health, Associate Professor, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Northwell Health

Along with our DSN, we are actively planning the annual meeting, doing podcasts, representing AACE in initiatives such as the Time in Range Coalition, and creating a treatment algorithm for diabetes. You will be hearing from each of our vice chairs over the course of the year, giving their perspectives on various topics in diabetes relevant to our member community.

Join our AACE Diabetes Disease State Network to contribute to the governance and content of our organization. As an expert volunteer, you will serve as physician liaisons, faculty, or program editors for AACE educational programs and authors or reviewers for AACE white papers and guidelines.
