The 2020 algorithm for the comprehensive management of persons with type 2 diabetes was developed to provide practical evidence-based guidance for treatment that considers a spectrum of risks and complications. Since originally created in 2013, the algorithm has been updated as new therapies, management approaches, and important clinical data have emerged. The 2020 algorithm includes sections on lifestyle therapy, a complications-centric model for care of persons with overweight/obesity, prediabetes, management of hypertension and dyslipidemia (risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease), glucose control with medications, insulin therapy, and includes a chart summarizing the attributes of each antihyperglycemic class approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through December 2019.
